Is there anyone who took medication for hypothyroidism during pregnancy and had a child born with defects?
I’ve asked ALOT of questions concerning this as I’m 2 months pg with hypothyroidism. (Just found out two days ago) I’m not opposed to taking the medication, I’m just wondering if anyone has had a child born with defects linked to the medication.
If you are talking about synthroid, you have to tell your thyroid doctor you are pregnant and get your medication adjusted. Pregnancy usually requires an increase to a synthroid perscription. It was actually realized about two years ago that a woman that gets pregnant while controlling her thyroid condition with synthroid needs a 30% increase in dosage.
We’ve had two healthy children while taking synthroid, and one miscarriage caused in part because the thyroid doctor did not keep the dosage of synthroid in check. What ever is that blood measurment that the synthroid is supposed to try to keep levels between 0.1 to 1 was at 5.6 just before a miscarriage because the synthroid dosage had not been properly increased.
Sorry, haven’t seen links about birth defects for medication, but there is quite a bit that shows birth defects for untreated thyroid problems.
i also have that and my doc told me i should NOT take it if i become pregnant. Im sorry i dont have the exact answer your looking for but thats just what she told me when i was prescibed it. She told me if we decide to try for a child…stop meds about 2 months ahead of time
I have hypothryroidism. With my first pregnancy I didn’t know I had it (I had been tested before, but it was always borderline, and then afterwards in the hospital they discovered it was all out of wack). With my second I knew I had it. My TSH was through the roof. I took my medication at the beginning of the pregnancy and then I ended up needing surgery for a huge ovarian cyst and taking my synthroid sort of went out the window at that point.
Neither of my kids have any defects.
I doubt that answers your question very well
I’ve never heard of a defect caused by the medication; only defects caused by NOT taking it.
If you need it to make yourself ‘normal’ then you should take. Doctors wouldn’t give you something if the benefits didn’t outweigh the risks. You should take your medication as much as you possibly can!!
im sure ur doc wouldnt give u meds that could cause birth defects. just do some research on google and web md and ask ur doc lots of questions
You can assure that your child WILL be born with birth defects by NOT taking it!
I have hypothyroidism and I am 39 weeks with a very very healthy boy. Please take your medicine!
You baby will NOT form properly with a slow thyroid!
