Depression does go hand and hand with hypothyroidism, but there are far more severe consequences of not taking your medicine besides depression. I have had hypothyroidism for over 20 years, and there was a two month period a few years ago when I ran out of medicine and just didn’t have time to schedule a doctor visit to get a new prescription.
When I did go to the doctor, she was very angry with me for going without the medicine for two months. She said that I could very easily have had a heart attack. As you probably already know, once you are diagnosed with hypothyroidism, you must take thyroid replacement medicine for the rest of your life.
I think so. I have been taking mine for about 13 years now. Before I took it I was dry, constipated, depressed, achy all over, was tired all the time but could not sleep…
I can’t figure out why you would want to stop taking it…It’s not expensive, it makes you feel better..If you were only two when you started taking it you probably don’t remember feeling depressed..
I take the lowest dose 50 mcg. If you have been taking any more than that you most definately will notice a change..It might take a few weeks though..Also you could have serious medical problems if you don’t take it.
Don’t stop it would be very foolish.
Yes knowledge hungry you are absolutely correct! Not taking the medication that "YOUR DOCTOR" has prescribed for you will cause depression.
If you want to live well with hypothyroidism then don’t play around with your medication. Always make sure that you have and go to your bi-annual or annual appointments just in case you need a medication adjustment.
If your thyroid levels vary off and your thyroid hormone replacement needs to be adjusted in either direction you could experience symptoms of either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism depending on whether these levels need to be increased or decreased. I believe that bone and joint issues can actually be caused by too much thyroid hormone replacement as well.
NEVER EVER rely on self treatment with outside supplements.
