Are you a woman in your 40s or 50s? Are you experiencing symptoms like fatigue, erratic periods, mood swings, weight gain, low sex drive, or hair loss? If so, you and your doctor probably assume it’s related to perimenopause or menopause. But it could be your thyroid. The new book, The Menopause Thyroid Solution, from best-selling author and thyroid patient advocate Mary Shomon, helps women sort out their hormonal symptoms, and get properly diagnosed and treated. And the book helps thyroid patients make their way through perimenopause and menopause living and feeling well. More information online at www.menopausethyroid.com

Answer by Momsey
There are 2 main types of thyroid problems: hypothyroidism (underactive) and hyperthyroidism (overactive).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothyroidism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperthyroidism

The first diagnostic step is bloodwork to check your thyroid hormone levels (T3, T4, TSH, Free T3, Free T4 etc) and your thyroid antibodies.

Best of luck!

Q&A: symptoms associated with thyroid problems in a corgi??

Question by leslie anne levine: symptoms associated with thyroid problems in a corgi??
I have a 3ish corgi/rat terrier mix named bliss, and i adopted her from a humane society a year and a half ago. after an unexplained weight gain over the past year, we found out she has a thyroid problem. the vet called today to tell me that the normal level for something (i didn’t catch exactly what) in a dog is between 0 and .6, and the blood work indicated that her level was a 2.33.
we are starting bliss on meds on monday, and i was wondering… with the weight gain over the past year due to the thyroid problem, she has also had a lot of submissive urination (rolling over on her back to be pet & peeing), little house accidents (even though these didn’t occur much when we first got her, and she is housebroken/taken outside and on walks often), and she has never been able to tolerate other animals (even though she’s the sweetest dog EVER around people). could these 3 symptoms be related to the thyroid problem? once she is on her new medicine, is it possible they may disappear?

Best answer:

Answer by bad kitty
the going potty in the house could be caused by thyroid issues.

submissive peeing and aggression toward other animals is a socialization, confidence and training issue. you are going to need to address these with consistency and training. which would leave me to think that the accidents in the house are also somewhat behavioral also.

you need to find a training class, or a personal trainer to show you how to best work with you on teaching your dog better manners. the more you work and allow your dog to succeed in the training the more confident the dog will become and not be so submissive towards you. your dog should view you as the leader but not be so submissive that they potty when you speak or come near them.

getting the dog on a schedule of eating, drinking and excericise also helps build confidence. take the dog for at least 2 long walks a day to help with excess energy and make them more receptive to the training. when they first start to act nervous around something tell them no and make the dog sit and be calm before any more attention occurs.

be very consistent. do not allow for some behaviors some of the time and then not other times. it will only confuse your dog and make things worse or take longer to learn.

what are signs or symptoms of a thyroid problem or disorder?

Question by Ariah!!!: what are signs or symptoms of a thyroid problem or disorder?
Hello, I have not had mine checked yet, but one of my doctors (for anxiety) told me to because I have anxiety and night sweats. I am in the process of finding a doctor to do blood work for me to get it checked. In the meantime though, can you tell me what other signs or symptoms are associated with thyroid?

Thanks

P.S.. I am 27 year old female, if that makes a difference.

Answer by Arlene
Underactive thyroid: Sleeping a lot, cold, putting on weight. This is what I have had for 33 years. Medication ends all of the above.
Overactive I’m not sure maybe someone else will answer that for you.

Can these symptoms be linked to thyroid problems?

Question by Lloyd Majere: Can these symptoms be linked to thyroid problems?
My girlfriend has been ailed since she was a very young child. Her main symptoms are anxiety, phobias (mainly hemophobia, fear of blood, and anything related, such as needles and violent activities. Even a small scratch on herself that starts to bleed will trigger a panic attack), and hypoglycemia (though that has been undiagnosed.) All have been present since she was around age 5. However, is it possible that these might all be symptoms to a thyroid problem (or something along those lines) as they can all be linked to hormonal problems?

Please note that I am asking here because her mom does not allow her to see a doctor. It’s complicated and irrelevant to this question, but she has not and will not be able to see a doctor on this issue. Also, any tests involving blood or needles will trigger her phobia and/or anxiety (sedatives have failed to work), hence why the hypoglycemia is undiagnosed. Any help you can give is appreciated.
I asked her about her body temperature, she said it is generally higher than average, quote “at least 99.” Does that help?

Best answer:

Answer by Ardinay
To answer your question simply put a professional in the medical field could only tell you.

As a fellow victim to someone with thyroid problems that eventually led to cancer i can give you my advice and knowldge. if she has all of those problems at once then its more then likely not a thyroid problem. Based on reaction to seeing and feeling her phobias are triggered. This means it is most likely a mental state of being. Hormonal issues can also be a problem if she went through some sort of condition and takes pills or has imbalance in stress and love life. If there was a thyroid problem you would note she has an inflamed thyroid. In otherwords it would be noticeable that her thyroid “neck” looks odd or differenr then it did before. Lumps, larger size, increased weight, no diet, frequent sore throats all point to signs of thyroid problems.

I hope this helps some mate.

Q&A: Is there any reason for having symptoms of a thyroid problem, but having normal blood levels?

Question by meghanelizabeth627: Is there any reason for having symptoms of a thyroid problem, but having normal blood levels?
I have a lot of the symptoms, but I got my blood tested and it came back normal. My mom had hyperthroidism and had her thyroid removed. Problems in this area are hereditary, but I cant figure out why I have all the symptoms and no reason for it…. Help me?

Best answer:

Answer by Pickleblossom
I had a similar situation and it was very frustrating. A few months back someone knowledgable – moreso than a family doctor – looked at my T4 levels and explained it to me. Apparently the numbers can all come up within the normal range, but there’s a certain pair (I’m sorry I can only recall that T4 is one of them) that when they are both in a borderline normal range it indicates that you’re at risk for abnormal thyroid function in the near future and some people already feel symptoms associated with abnormal thyroid when they are at that stage.

The thing that worried me was that the magic pairing that indicates possible future problems is right there on all the tests but most common practice doctors don’t know that the pairing is indicative of a possible problem down the road.

I suggest you see an endocrinologist if you can. Just to be sure. It’s always better to listen to what your body is telling you even if the science doesn’t show the evidence yet. We are such complex machines and the endocrine system is so highly specialized that only those who study it know all the magic formulas and what a PAIR of borderline levels indicate as opposed to their “normal” appearance when viewed seperately.

But to ease your mind, I recall that it can take many many years for a problem to finish developing. Plus, if the endocrinologist sees something fishy, it is up to them to decide if you should try a thyroid pill to help with the symptoms, regardless of what the tests say. That is what mine did. Unfortunately it wasn’t the answer for me. But perhaps it could be for you. We are all such unique chemistry sets.

Good luck!

Overactive thyroid? My blood test result for TSH =0.9. I have many of the symptoms for it. I’m a 30yr old male

Question by The raven: Overactive thyroid? My blood test result for TSH =0.9. I have many of the symptoms for it. I’m a 30yr old male

For a long time now I’ve felt tired most of the time. I sometimes feel quite weak in my muscles. I go to the gym 3 times a week. I eat healthy. I don’t smoke and I don’t drink alcohol excessively. I tend to be thirsty a lot of the time. I get out of breath quite easily. Also in the gym cetain exercises really restrict my breathing. I have bowel movements usually 4-5 times a day which are usually quite loose and sometimes like diarrhoea. I sometimes get heart palpitations. I usually don’t sleep ‘that’ long and never seem to feel refreshed if I have a decent sleep. My concentration can be very poor and my memory isn’t always that great. I got diagnosed with depression last year. I’m off the medication now. But looking back I’m now not convinced I was depressed at all. I think I should go to the doctors for a full thyroid blood test. What do people think? Thanks.

Symptoms of thyroid problems?

Question by meeeeelee: Symptoms of thyroid problems?
What are the major characteristics that distinguish between having an over active or an under active thyroid?

Best answer:

Answer by School nurse
Hyperthyroidism (over active) and Hypothyroidism (under active) are exact opposites. The thyroid gland plays a part in every system in the body so when it is not working right it has a significant effect on how you feel. In HYPERthyroidism, everthing is sped up: Your heart beats too fast, you breath too fast, you get diarrhea–bowels move to fast, your are hyper, may run a fever, etc. You get the picture? In HYPOthyroidism, everything is slowed down: A slow heart rate, slow respiratory rate, constipation, subnormal temp, you feel lethargic, etc.

underactive thyroid symptoms-Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid) – Herbal Remedies, Symptoms and Causes

Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid) – Herbal Remedies, Symptoms and Causes

Hypothyroidism results due to the under performance of the thyroid gland resulting in the reduced production of the hormone Thyroxin. Thyroxin is responsible for the various metabolic activities and the under production of this hormone results in several discomforts of the body. Most people remain in total darkness regarding the under performance of the thyroid gland.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism are not that singular that may help in confirming the under activity of the thyroid gland. But careful observations of few symptoms can help to affirm hypothyroidism. These include fatigue and tiredness, menstrual disorders, heart palpitations, thrush, poor concentration, dry and brittle hair resulting in hair fall, pains in muscles and joints, abnormal weight gain and many more. Sometimes there is a swelling in the neck or larynx and the condition is called Goitre. Hypothyroidism can be diagnosed by testing the levels of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), T3 and T4 hormones and their interactions.

Causes

1. Deficiency of Iodine is the main cause of hypothyroidism.

2. Hashimoto’s disease is an auto immune disease that affects the thyroid gland resulting in low production of hormones.

3. Due to any surgery performed on the thyroid gland the functioning of the gland is reduced.

4. Sometimes treatment of hyperthyroidism also reduces the level of thyroid hormones to a great extent below the normal.

5. Inflammation of the thyroid gland or Thyroiditis can reduce the functioning of the thyroid gland.

6. Underperformance of the pituitary gland also leads to hypothyroidism.

Herbal Remedies

1. Iodine deficiency is one of the main causes of hypothyroidism, so inclusion of sea vegetables especially bladder wrack helps in raising the levels of thyroid hormones. Kelp seaweed is rich in iodine and antioxidants that helps in proper functioning of the thyroid gland.

2. Spirulina is advised by some naturopaths to treat Hypothyroidism.

3. Irish moss as suggested by the herbalists nourishes the thyroid gland that aids in its normal functioning.

4. For women the herb Black Cohosh helps to maintain the estrogen levels and is beneficial in hypothyroidism.

5. The herb Guggul is renowned for stimulating thyroid gland but proper consultation with the health experts are required before administering the extracts of this herb.

6. The fresh tincture of the herb Gotu kola is highly beneficial as it regulates the thyroid hormones and also the nervous system of the body.

7. The use of Siberian Ginseng in treating hypothyroidism gives good results as it regulates the hormone levels by assisting in functioning of the adrenal and the thymus glands.

Foods rich in trace elements like calcium, manganese, copper, neodymium, terbium helps the thyroid gland for smooth metabolism that helps in reducing hypothyroidism.

underactive thyroid symptoms-Underactive Thyroid – Hypothyroidism Causes, Symptoms and Natural Treatment

Underactive Thyroid – Hypothyroidism Causes, Symptoms and Natural Treatment

Hypothyroidism is related with thyroid gland which is unable to produce enough thyroid hormone which is required by our body. It is even more common than hyperthyroidism. Most of the people are affected by hypothyroidism. The problem of hypothyroidism usually affects women with increasing age. It may be the result of any surgery or any type of treatment against hyperthyroid.

Hyperthyroid grows gradually but one can observe its symptoms suddenly which include severe muscle cramps in the arms, neck, legs, back and shoulders, mental sluggishness, hoarseness, swollen facial features and also enlarged tongue.

The main causes of hypothyroidism

1. Due to side affect of some medicines though this side affect is also very rare.
2. Infections caused by viruses and bacteria which result into permanent hypothyroidism by depressing the production of thyroid hormone.
3. Due to malfunctioning of pituitary gland.
4. Congenital defect.
5. Iodine deficient diet.
6. Removal of thyroid gland due to cancer or other thyroid disorder result into hypothyroidism.

The main symptoms of hypothyroidism

1. General symptoms of hypothyroid slow down the metabolic processes. The general symptoms are weight gain, difficulty in tolerating the cold weather, sluggishness and fatigue.
2. Skin becomes dry and thick, decrease sweating, hair also becomes thin or coarse, eyebrows may disappear, and nails also become brittle.
3. Mild swelling around the eyes.
4. Irregular menstrual cycle, difficulty in pregnancy.
5. Respiratory muscles become weak and thus function of the lung decreases.
6. Slows the heart rate and the person experiences a short breathe in doing exercises.
7. Causes constipation.
8. It may cause hypertension and also raises the level of cholesterol.

Some of the natural treatments for hypothyroid –

A sea weed known as Bladderwrack, which is found in several oceans across the globe has proven to a great extent to reduce the symptoms of hypothyroidism. It is rich in iodine content and thus they are very helpful and effective thyroid stimulant. It also restores the function of thyroid gland. A person suffering from thyroid must take 600mg Bladderwrack capsules 1-3 times a day with water.

A perennial plant known as Black Cohosh is basically found in North America. It is very effective in the treatment of thyroid and they are available in the market as dietary supplement.

A natural herb known as Nettle is very helpful in treating thyroid. This herb is rich in iodine and it is naturally found in the temperate regions. It is very beneficial to treat the condition of hypothyroid.

Thyroid problems … symptoms say yes, doc says no.?

Question by Laurie T: Thyroid problems … symptoms say yes, doc says no.?
Hypothyroidism runs in my family. In the last couple of months, my body temp has been below normal. My doc recorded the last two months as 96.5 degrees. I’m cold all the time, I’m feeling depressed, I feel the need to sleep all the time, I’m more irritable than usual, I’ve gained weight although I still eat healthy and exercise. All these things point to hypothyroidism, but my doctor says my bloodwork was normal. I’m concerned because I think she may be overlooking something. What should I do? Also, could it be something besides thyroid?

Have the doc run the test again. It sure sounds like hypothyroidism. Labs have been known to mess up, so just have it done again.

Nervousness, severe weight loss or gain.

The medications for the thyroid are very cheap–compared to meds for almost anything else. Taking the med is very important–the thyroid is an important part of life.

Are my problems all symptoms of a thyroid problem?

Question by Jen: Are my problems all symptoms of a thyroid problem?
Doctor had a blood test done today because irregular periods and fatigue. I also have acne that just started last few months, losing alot of hair, trouble losing weight, mouthful of canker sores, twitchy eye, blurry vision that comes and goes. Now I’m curious, is all this related? I’ve just been ignoring it, because everytime I go to a doctor for the canker sores they just say it’s stress.

Answer by chatty_redhead
The fatigue, irregular periods, hair loss, and trouble losing weight are all part of a thyroid problem. The twitchy and blurry eyes and the canker sores (and likely the acne) are related to stress, not a thyroid. Your thyroid controls metabolism and none of the eye or skin stuff would be metabolism related.

Are thyroid problems genetic? And what are symptoms of Thyroid Problems?

Question by Sierra: Are thyroid problems genetic? And what are symptoms of Thyroid Problems?
my mom has thyroid problems and i was wonder if i could have it to. what are the symptoms if any? and im 14 yr.s old..
how do i go about asking my dr. if i have thyroid problems?
can it cause me to be more tired and make it hard for me to fall asleep?

Best answer:

Answer by Withagrainofsalt
Yes, there is a genetic component to some thyroid disorders, but that doesn’t mean that you will necessarily have the same problems your mom has. It often takes a mixture of genes and the certain environmental conditions (stress, illness, etc.) for a condition to express itself. Thyroid disorders basically are of two types, hypo and hyper. It would depend on what type of disorder you have in terms of figuring out what the symptoms would be. In any case, thyroid problems are usually very treatable and fairly common. Nothing to worry about.
